Frequently Asked Questions

How Much Will It Cost To Groom My Dog?

"A Good Groom Is Never Cheap and a Cheap Groom is Never Good" these were the words of an old since departed grooming friend. I know that this quote resonates with all good groomers in our industry. Rest In Peace Jackie Grimmetđź’ś

When I take a call from someone inquiring about an appointment often the first question they ask me is "How much is it to groom my Cockerpoo? " or whatever breed it may happen to be. Obviously pricing is important, but there are so many variables. Many groomers do not even publish price lists because we've all had the experience of quoting a price and finding that we've completely underestimated what is involved due to the dog's temperament or the dog being very matted and needing to be clipped off which is something a groomer never wants to do. Grooming dogs well, safely and to a high standard in a timely way is not easy, the majority of groomers work incredibly hard and everything is done for the welfare of your dog. There is also a lot of pre work preparation and a lot of diary and scheduling work. Anyway, checkout our price list, you always get a good groom at Scruffy To Fluffy!

How Quickly Can I Get An Appointment?

All our services are by appointment only, we are always very busy. We run an appointment scheduling system and regular customers usually have an annual schedule that we work to.

It is sometimes possible to get a quick appointment if we have a cancellation but during busy periods especially during the summer months these are filled very quickly. It's worth a text I will reply quickly if I have a slot or not.

What Happens If My Dog Has Fleas

We will contact you immediately, and take the best course of action for your dog. As a rule we are not happy about fleas in our parlour and if you think your dog has fleas please rearrange your appointment and treat them. If you bring a dog to us that is crawling with fleas we will contact you immediately and ask you to collect immediately. We cannot take the risk of contaminating other dogs in our care and our own dogs. If your dog has fleas we strongly recommend you contact your vet and proceed with treatment. Over the counter treatments are not hugely effective these days.

Additional Fees Will Apply

Can I Stay With My Dog During The Groom?

I'm sorry No! It makes the process more stressful your dog becomes anxious because they become fixated on you and try to get to you and become very fidgety and distracted if you are there. Our grooming techniques and many years of experience enable us to gain your dogs trust and full attention when grooming them so that we can perform the best groom possible, in a nice safe way. If you don't want to leave your dog with a groomer I suggest you learn how to groom them yourself, many people do groom their own dogs very successfully and there is nothing wrong in that. Not everyone requires the services of a dog groomer.

How Long Will It Take To Groom My Dog?

It usually takes around 2 hours for a full groom.  It all depends on the condition of the coat, the time since the last groom. We try to do everything in a calm unhurried way and get them back to you around 2 or 2 hours 15. We normally like to text you a time to collect. We can have unexpected delays but we will text you and keep you informed.

How Often Should My Dog Be Groomed?

This all depends on the breed, any breed that has a mix of Poodle or Bichon Frisé coat must be groomed between 4 weeks and a maximum of 6 weeks. You could drag it out to 8 weeks but this is not ideal. The reason being that the nature of these curley coated breeds makes it harder work for your groomer and longer for your dog to be standing on the grooming table. For very old seniors we recommend more frequent grooms so we can keep the process as quick a possible.

Is ear care necessary for dogs?

At Scruffy to Fluffy, we know that ear care is essential for optimum canine health. We are extremely careful and use only the most gentle cleaning & wiping techniques using veterinary ear cleaner in order to groom the sensitive areas around and inside your dog’s ears, which will help to avoid ear problems.

Do I need to worry about grass seeds

YES!

Although they may look innocent enough, grass seeds can present a real danger to your dog. If not found and left untreated, they can latch onto your dogs coat and cause serious infections and worse!

Grass seeds can settle into your dog’s skin and stay there unnoticed for a long time, causing problems such as ulcers and ear infections. Here’s how to spot them and how to help your dog…

Which are the worst grass seeds?

The barbed seeds – also known as grass awns – can be found in many wild grasses, as well as on barley and rye. They tend to get stuck in your dog’s fluffiest areas, such as their paws, ears, tail or armpits. They can also be inhaled or swallowed and cause infections. In the worst cases, they can get forced under your dog’s skin and may move around to different parts of their body. There are some horrific outcomes.

If grass seeds are not removed quickly, abscesses and ulcers can form, along with many other health issues. If your vet suspects your dog has one buried somewhere, he or she’s likely to do some thorough investigation work – even if they can’t see or feel them!

My own dog had one of these barbed seeds deep in her ear, my poor dog was in a lot of distress until it was safely removed by a Vet.

At Scruffy To Fluffy if you would like and your dog will tolerate it, we can give very short paw cuts (poodle feet) particularly in the summer so that the seeds are less likely to get stuck. This is not suitable for all breeds, in which case make sure you check their feet very carefully. Please see our Extra Paws Treatments in Services

Which Shampoo?

Getting the bathing process right is fundamental to a good groom and using the right shampoo is really important. We spend a lot of time deciding on the correct shampoo for your dogs coat type.

Some breeds such as Westies and Shih-Tzu's are predisposed to yeasty skin problems in which case we will use anti-fungal shampoos.

Sometimes Vet's will recommend a particular shampoo, that's fine bring it along and we will use it. Remember to ask us for it back so you can take it home with you.
